To judge the changes of life quality over time, people have to think from two points: do what they gain outweigh what they lose? And is what they gain all what they want? A naive approach, but one, which may be useful is: If their lives are full of pleasant things, they consider the things worth doing and themselves doing well, while if their lives are full of pain, they consider themselves to be suffering. Obviously, material and spiritual needs are both important.
Pursuits for many people in modern times are cars, house and things like these. When families do have cars and the like, they will benefit from these things in two aspects: For one thing, the life quality will greatly and positively improve such as driving one's private car on a snowy day without suffering from cold and the wet. For another, for a modem citizen, it is more or less a must-do to catch up with the novel trends of lifestyles In other words, in fact, it is not that they choose to use those things, but that those things choose to live with them, to be exact.
However, if we ignored the dark side of all these stuff, we would be fooled by these stuff without doubt. First, production, transportation and usage of those electrical appliances and vehicles leads to countless environmental issues like air pollution, noise and radiation, all of which cause many drawbacks to both human beings and natural beings at the same time. Second, running after things like private cares and LED TVs and competing with others will ignite the desire for materialism and lead to a vicious circle. Namely, people will judge their living standard depending on the material stuff they get and comparing with others. This will be a disaster if people seek only material comforts without spiritual pursuit.
All in all, if we finally recognize the truth and myth of living standard consisting of both material satisfaction and spiritual pursuit, owning stuff like cars is a choice but not a necessity for all citizens who should enjoy themselves also with family bonds, culture and faith.
